Former Colony member donates to Marshall Public Library

Recently, the Marshall Public Library, Marshall, Illinois, received a $100,000 donation from the estate of former Handy Writers Colony member Edwin “Sonny” Daly. Daly passed away in May 2015.

As a high school student, Daly began writing fiction at the Colony where James Jones was completing From Here to Eternity. Daly  graduated from Yale University where he became the first undergraduate to publish a novel.

Some Must Watch was published in 1956 and receive a favorable review in The New York Times. His second novel, A Legacy of Love, appeared in 1958.

After graduation, Daly studied philosophy at Stanford University. Most of his career was spent at Menlo School, Menlo Park, California, where he taught and later served as Head of the Lower School and then Headmaster.

The library plans to use Daly’s donation towards renovations.
